This "Birthday Rhapsody" was commissioned by an advanced-level adult pianist as a surprise gift for his mother's 70th Birthday; it is meant to honor the grandeur of seven decades of life and to portray a few facets of the joys and tribulations of raising 3 boys! The commission request stipulated that the work be tonally grounded, lyrically-driven, and in a grand neo-Romantic style, with several emotional contrasts - from simple serenity to passionate declamation - and furthermore, that the work should include some passage-work in which to display technical prowess.
